Kagami Biraki Set KAN-060E
Kagami Biraki – A Joyful Tradition of New Beginnings.
Kagami Biraki, which means “opening the mirror,” is a traditional Japanese ceremony filled with meaning and celebration. In this ritual, people break open the lid of a sake barrel or open round rice cakes called kagami mochi. This act symbolizes the hope for happiness, good health, and a bright future ahead.
Originally held during the New Year to mark a fresh start, kagami biraki has now become a joyful custom at weddings, company anniversaries, building openings, and many other life milestones—where people gather to celebrate new chapters together with a toast and a smile.
The tradition dates back to the time of Tokugawa Ietsuna, the fourth shogun of the Tokugawa family. Before heading into battle, he invited his lords to the castle, placed a mirror in front of his ancestors' armor, performed a dance, and held a grand feast to pray for victory. Over time, this ceremony evolved from a warrior’s prayer into a festive event to bring people together in hope and harmony.
Whether it’s welcoming the new year or celebrating life’s big moments, kagami biraki reminds us to look ahead with positivity—and to enjoy the moment with everyone around us.

About the Barrel Used for Kagami Biraki.
The barrels commonly used for kagami biraki ceremonies are called komodaru—decorative sake barrels wrapped in straw matting known as komo. These typically come in three sizes: 18L (1-to), 36L (2-to), and 72L (4-to). While they’re mainly used for the kagami biraki ritual, you’ll also often see them in front of sake breweries or izakayas to showcase their brand.
Originally, komo was used in the Edo period to protect sake barrels during shipping, but over time it became more decorative, evolving into the stylish komodaru we see today.
Our rental barrels are made of stainless steel and can hold up to 18 liters. Since the inside is slightly raised, the actual capacity is 18L. You can pour in your preferred drink, and we recommend filling it to about 80% for the best experience.
Included Items
- As an option (additional charge), you can insert a printed sheet with your company name or logo on the front of the barrel.

Kagami Biraki Tips
The most important guest gives the sake barrel a tap with a wooden mallet—no force needed, the lid is pre-cut.
Guests stand on either side to watch the moment.
When drinking from the masu cup, sip from a flat side, not a corner.
Hold it with your right hand underneath and rest your thumb lightly on the rim.
Meaning of the Words on the Sake Barrel
「祝」 = "Celebration" / "Congratulations"
The character 祝 (shuku) represents celebration, joy, and congratulations. It's commonly seen at weddings, grand openings, and other happy occasions.
When displayed on a sake barrel, it conveys a heartfelt wish for happiness and good fortune to all involved.
「寿」 = "Longevity" / "Best Wishes for a Joyous Occasion"
The character 寿 (kotobuki) symbolizes longevity, prosperity, and heartfelt blessings. It's often used to mark special celebrations such as weddings or milestone events.
On a sake barrel, it expresses a wish for lasting success, health, and happiness.
