The Kakejiku (or Kakemono) is a Japanese hanging scroll or wall scroll made of silk, cotton or other materials with a painting or calligraphy work mounted on it. Thanks to its flexible fabric, it could be rolled up for storage.
Often accompanied by an ikebana, a flower arrangement workm, it is traditionally the usual decoration of the tokonoma.

The tokonoma is traditionally a built-in alcove in Japanese houses which serves as a display space for art pieces that resemble the transcendent beauty itself. Generally the art works displayed here consisted of kakejiku (hanging scrolls), ikebana (arranged flowers), okimono (decorative ornaments) and bonsai, although bonsai were originally considered impure for this high respected place.

The benefit of kakejik is that it could be changed frequently due to the present season or occasion and it could be stored rolled up in a relatively small space.

Kakejiku was introduced to Japan through Buddhism in the Heian Period to display religious images, calligraphy or poetry.
From the Muramachi Period the range of favourized themes shifted mainly to landscapes, paintings of flowers and birds, portraiture and poetry. There are several types of kakejiku.
